You might be a bit behind on some news. The Academy Awards will be adding a "Best Popular Movie" category this year. There was a big push by Disney, which owns ABC, which shows the Academy Awards. I find this absolutely ridiculous. How does one then determine from what is best and popular? Is a popular film popular today but not tomorrow? It is all subjective and they are just desperate to interject some new life into the proceedings. They only need keep the Best Picture Nominees at an absolute 10 and perhaps make the acting nominees 6 instead of 5. They already have a best animated film category and Toy Story 3 ended up on the best picture list too. I agree with you completely, as do a mass of other people. It absolutely is a desperate attempt to interject some new life into the proceedings. As you said theres already a best picture category with up to ten possible nominations. Surely one of those ten could be Black Panther and problem solved. Popular in this case means money making.
