I find this absolutely ridiculous. How does one then determine from what is best and popular? Is a popular film popular today but not tomorrow? It is all subjective and they are just desperate to interject some new life into the proceedings. They only need keep the Best Picture Nominees at an absolute 10 and perhaps make the acting nominees 6 instead of 5. They already have a best animated film category and Toy Story 3 ended up on the best picture list too. theres already a best picture category with up to ten possible nominations. Surely one of those ten could be Black Panther and problem solved. Except that Black Panther isn't going to be 1 of those 10. Those 10 movies will most likely be from this list: A Star is Born Beautiful Boy Boy Erased The Favourite First Man The Front Runner If Beale Street Could Talk Mary, Queen of Scots The Old Man & the Gun On the Basis of Sex Widows Black Panther won't get a Best Picture nomination. That's why Disney bullied the Academy into creating the "Most Popular Film" category so Black Panther can get a non-technical Oscar.
