You might be a bit behind on some news. The Academy Awards will be adding a "Best Popular Movie" category this year. There was a big push by Disney, which owns ABC, which shows the Academy Awards. I find this absolutely ridiculous. How does one then determine from what is best and popular? Is a popular film popular today but not tomorrow? It is all subjective and they are just desperate to interject some new life into the proceedings. They only need keep the Best Picture Nominees at an absolute 10 and perhaps make the acting nominees 6 instead of 5. They already have a best animated film category and Toy Story 3 ended up on the best picture list too. They will probably just take the 6 highest grossing movies worldwide and vote on them. 
It would be hilarious if they choose to include 10 movies in the category and "The Meg" gets an Oscar nomination.
