Speaking of wartime propaganda films, the North Star (1943) was a big attempt at getting Americans to back the Soviet cause during the war. The village that is attacked by the Germans is shown in extreme idyllic fashion. It's almost a Utopia. Songs, dancing, everyone working together, no want, no unfulfilled needs. Then the Germans come and try to destroy it all. The interesting aspect is the film was recut in the late 1950's and released as "Armored Attack". The idyllic Soviet village scenes were mostly removed and the film starts with the German invasion. Then it closes with a commentary on the Hungarian Uprising in 1956 and the Soviet suppression of it. Without looking it up, just going by memory, I believe that the participants in "The North Star," particularly writer Lillian Hellman got a close look from HUAC during the Red Scare.
