Lack of an ability to do so, obviously characters like Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow can not fly nor at least can the latter three breathe in space.

Iron Man was shown to lose power almost straight after going through the portal so he couldn't have done anything.

Which only leaves Thor, who can travel through space in a straight line using the bifrost but that's all they've shown

So basically, the Avengers aren't mighty and are pretty much useless and ineffective, unless they have help from the US military's weapons.
