I actually like Divergent better than Hunger Games. I had read the first YA novel of Hunger Games before the film came out and hated it. Poorly written and a rip of previous works (The Most Dangerous Game, Battle Royale, e.g.) with not much imagination of its own. The film series didn’t help my opinion despite the presence of Jennifer Lawrence.
Divergent not only had Shailene Woodley (who would have had Lawrence’s career if Lawrence had never existed) but a supporting cast with more depth and talent than Hunger Games: Theo James, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, and Maggie Q, just to name some. And what a line-up of villains: Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, and Jeff Daniels. In Hunger Games, other than its lead, the best acting was done by its villain Donald Sutherland.
One mistake the series made was dividing the final book into two movies à la Hunger Games and Harry Potter. If they had asked me, I would have said, “No go. Don’t do it folks. Uh-uh.” But alas, they did not solicit my advice. Now, it looks like Allegiant will never be finished because Woodley will not return if it is going to be for cable TV.
