Yes, because that award, even debased as it is today, will confer on the film an 'artistic' legitimacy that mere popularity won't.
Which I don't feel it deserves, but there are plenty who'd disagree with me.
They don't make these films for Oscars. That's just not their aim and never has been. They don't need them. Their films are critical and box office hits. An Oscar (win or nomination) would just be an extra cherry on top.
Clearly someone wants them to start being made for Oscars, or there wouldn't be a push to create a special category to nominate them. So it would seem that all that critical and box office success just isn't enough without that cherry.
