Spider-Man 2 was a film that even the great late Roger Ebert pushed for an Oscar nomination.
In the 2000's comic based films were only looked at as mostly just popcorn block buster films (well granted most of them were) and up till 2007, with a few exceptions, weren't taken seriously.
The Dark Knight changed that. Nolan showed the world that comic book movies could tell compelling stories that didn't rely on CGI heavy effects and over the top action.
That's why that film got the biggest push that year, but it wasn't enough to change their prejudice against the genre. Sure they gave ledger the Oscar and gave the film some technical stuff. But no best picture or director.
2008 was the year Nolan was robbed of an Oscar.
Now thanks to Logan, it's looking like we're seeing a major change in the Oscars.

Nolan schools us on xmen 1.
"Few people kind of credit Bryan for what he deserves credit for, which is really inventing that genre. There really wasn't a superhero genre before X-Men came out. And funny enough, I remember catching a plan while we were promoting The Prestige with Chris Nolan. He said to me he always had the Batman in his mind even way back before 2000; he had the version of Batman that he ended up making, in his head. And he said 'when I went into the cinema, and I saw X-Men' he was like 'damn, that's my idea.' The idea that you can really delve into the emotional life to the vulnerabilities of these characters and that as well as being fantastical and amazing and action is what's going to hold people and make them care. That's what Bryan did. He had a lot of courage to do that."
Infact I already posted the video but I will do so again, the opening of xmen 1 changed comic books forever as a story telling drama format since the movie began like a play out from schindler's list
reason I said, if it is based on artistic merit. xmen 1, first class and batman begins will have more chance than any mcu colourful cartoon cgi heavy movie.
facts are facts
Just because he was inspired by X-Men, doesn't mean I have to suck it's dick.
Like Superman, I'll acknowledge it's contribution but don't expect me to say nice things about it.
The Dark Knight IS the superior film.
