Working in an industry exposes you to craft and technique that layman wont be aware of, so that bolded statement is inaccurate on your part.
1 person against 7 billion. The 1 person must possess extraordinary reasoning to show why Howard the Duck is a good movie especially if he's going against 7 billion detractors.
As other posters have mentioned there are technical qualities in writing a good script and directing a good film, so movies being completely subjective is a myth I'm afraid. These are not objective and when put up against something inferior you can deduce shortcomings in the form of pacing, plot, character, direction, etc. Unless someone is able to write a qualitative analysis on why Howard the Duck is better than the Godfather, then movie is not 100% subjective.
Being in the industry could in certain situations be detrimental when forming their opinion. Their overall opinion could be tainted because they know how the sausage is made. Instead of enjoying it as a whole piece of art they could get hung up on a bad scene, a bit of technical gaffe, etc.
I think where I differ from you on this is Good and Bad are qualifiers that are separate from the making of art. Someone could intentionally throw out every technical quality in writing and directing, and people can still think it's a great film Those technical qualities are just opinions that for the most part people agree on. In college I watched a 30min movie short of a man sitting in a chair out of focus, in a poorly lit room with a wired naked light bulb. The light bulb flickered randomly the whole time. Making that buzz lights sometimes emits. In the end just before fading to black a very light grey word appears on the screen. You almost couldn't read it. It said Depression. We had to discuss it for an 1hr. How it was shot, why was he out of focus and off to the side. What were the nicknacks in the window sill? To some this movie was groundbreaking and great to others it was trash.
In the end in my opinion nobodies opinion is important only your own. This means everybody's.
