Handkerchiefs are a disgusting concept in many ways. I've heard that once upon a time in Japan, individuals would carry small packages of tissues with them instead.

And historically, before the invention and widespread use of rubber, condoms were made out of certain animal organs and were reusable. Obviously they had to be cleaned in-between uses.
