I really wasn't at all interested in seeing this. The trailer sucked and if one wants to watch film with dirty muppets, one only needs turn to Peter Jackson's MEET THE FEEBLES - 89' which is a hilarious, crude— in the best of taste—and inventive riot. LOL, good reminder! I haven't seen that film in a long time, I'd completely forgotten it; it's all wot you say it is, and then some. And of course, SNL did have its own troop of narsty Muppets with Skred and The Land of Gorch, created specifically for the series by Jim Henson himself. Being television, they couldn't be quite as 'out there' as the films are, but they managed to get by with plenty of funny business anyway . Not being American, I am not familiar with SNL. I might check up on YT.
In spite of its crude irreverent humor, MTF is also sweet in parts and has an overall nice feel about the proceedings. Jackson made a very original film, but because it wasn't American, it didn't exactly get the following that may otherwise had been attributed to it. What it does prove, is an exceptional film-making talent that ending up knocking my socks off a few years later with Heavenly Creatures - 94' and a film that still does on the many many multiple viewings I have done.
