I'm so sorry. It hurts especially with pets because they really are like kids in a way--insofar as they never stop needing you...it's hard for those who haven't experienced bonding with a loved pet to understand the very particular way in which their passing can be so painful. You'll always have him in your heart, and though that can't take the place of his being there with you, you'll find the memory of him to be comforting as time passes. But I feel for what I know you're feeling now.
