Clooney came first to mind for me, but not with McAdams. Cate Blanchett is the pair for Clooney, and no doubt they could bring the characters that Hammett created to life the best.
With Rachel McAdams, I was thinking of a modernized version, still being faithful to the tone of the characters. That's when an interesting and risky alternative came to mind. Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I know that probably sounds weird, but I was thinking of Brick and the job he did in that film back 13 years ago. He was, in his mid 20's, one heck of a hard-boiled high schooler. Now in his late thirties, I could see him playing a little younger Nick to McAdams' Nora.
And Brick is the best modern time homage to Hammett's work I know of.
I know it's out there, but lol, I doubt anything is going to happen there anyway.
