It doesn't. You are right. Same words are spelled differently in different variations of English and multiple words are spelled the same way in the same variation of English. Pair/pear. There are many reasons why a word is pronounced the way it is pronounced. But acceptance by a community is one of the major reasons.

When I lived in Leicester I came up with all sorts of funny pronunciation. Belvoir street stumps even the long term residents of Leicester.
