There are and have been many societies where homosexuality was not stigmatized. The ancient Greeks and Romans considered homosexuality an act, not an identity. In feudal Japan it was the norm for samurai to have male lovers. In some societies special niches are created for homosexuals. Good examples would be the Catholic clergy and Buddhist monks. Only in the Judeo-Christian West and Islamic Middle East has there been the systematic hatred and oppression of homosexuals. I guess the point was that today there isn't. Catholic Clergy and Buddhist monks don't quite rate either, because to the followers of these beliefs, they are supposed to be celibate, homo or hetero, and with Catholicism, homosexuality dare not rear its ugly head. There aren't any major homophobia-free societies because the West has influenced the entire world through colonialism and Christianity. And then again through Marxism and Communist countries are all very homophobic. Thailand was never colonized by the West. It also seems to be very 'gay friendly'. And there are tribes in New Guinea where every boy goes through homosexual initiation rites. Meh about homosexuality and the clergy. You miss the point. Have you seen "The Name of the Rose"? Those monks were allover each other. But seriously, the Catholic and Buddhist clergies are refuges for homosexuals and always have been despite what the rules say.
