I think he's pretty good when he's allowed to go nuts in his movies, like in Macbeth, Prometheus or 12 years a slave. He was so entertaining in 12 years a slave that I'm sure Leo Dicaprio watched it and was ashamed that he couldn't do 10% of that in Django, which was a better movie than 12 years a slave. Even more embarrassing for Dicaprio is that Django was meant to be entertaining while 12 years was just senseless torture/slavery porn.
