'Dillinger' is a crime biopic about notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his gang who are hunted down by G-Man Melvin Purvis who serves as narrator. Michelle Phillips of harmony group The Mamas & The Papas gets her first major role here having appeared in Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie' (1971). Writer-director John Milius captures The Great Depression with fierce intensity but there's mordant humour to the bank robbers' violent escapades.
'The Ballad Of John Dillinger' - Billy Grammer
John Milius invited a fiery cast of character actors to shine by putting together an ensemble of talented but affordable support players. 'Dillinger' is followed by two television movies directed by Dan Curtis : 'Melvin Purvis : G-Man' (1974) and 'The Kansas City Massacre' (1975).
eh, it all felt like bells and whistles as well. Also Purvis never killed Dillinger at all. The performances are sublime, and some of the action is interesting, but the script needed massive work as well.
