amyghost I find the British police mystery series more to my taste. The murder is over quickly and usually without gratuitous gore. The killings are more often spur of the moment and not maiming and torturing. I avoid that on the news so can't see spending more time with it as "entertainment". Midsomer Murders = outstanding ! I do watch L&0 Criminal Intent reruns … and some SVUs.. which my re-run channel finally cancelled and replaced with The Good Wife. The Brits do it all more elegantly. I definitely appreciate their procedural shows over most of the American ones, as well as the often tediously gruesome 'Nordic' crime dramas--the main upside to some of those are the performances, such as in 'Beck', 'Wallander' and a few others. But the OTT bloodiness/'snuff' aspects are a definite turnoff with most of these shows.
It's not just the crime dramas, either. One of my favorite British series from the last couple of decades was the marvelously black 'House of Cards'. When the US version hit the airwaves, they did exactly what I feared (and expected): ramped up the gratuitous sex and violence, and muddied the basic story with a lot of tedious and unnecessary business. We never appear to learn that sometimes less and leaner (and less gory) is better.
