I don't think either of these movies were expected to pull in huge numbers. El Royale is likely a disappointment, but I'd bet the studio is fine with First Man. La La Land (Damian Chazelle's last film) opened to just $9 million in it's first week of wide release, and his film before (Whiplash) that oy made $13 TOTAL domestically.
