Was the point of this thread to discredit Black Panther if it won an Oscar? If it doesn't win an award then Marvel sucks for not winning it. But if they do win, then it was a head pat? Pretty much. What some on this board don't realize is for a lot of film buffs the Heath Ledger and Logan award was seen as head pats. I had a more direct contact with the Ledger as I was forced to go to a Oscar Party because of a business contact. A hellish party to go too. Imagine around 300 people dressed to the 9's. I had to wear a fucking tuxedo for the 3rd time in my life. That type of party. At a pretty swanky country club in Columbia SC. All either business types and/or artist (usually the wives) and/or artist patrons. Everyone there were asked (ie forced to) donate a certain amount to either an art program or artist directly. When Heath Ledger won there were 3 reactions. A audible groan was the first reaction I saw/heard. We were playing Oscar games (to play you had to donate another amount) and everyone had to play. So as everyone is getting loosed up with alcohol during the night you get the second reaction. How movies are falling away from the art form it used to be. How a movie based on a comic book should've never been nominated. How it was banal. How the craft of movie making has become low and almost pornographic in it's crassness. etc etc. And the 3rd reaction when the game was finally tallied and people saw other's picks. If you picked Heath to win you either were betting on the sympathy of the academy (the headpat) or you were so lacking in a critical eye when it comes to art that you thought his performance was anything other than garish and tacky. Therefore you were garish and tacky. Luckily that was the only time I had to go to that party. And while I still hold fast that my personal opinion was that The Dark Knight wasn't on the level that the others in the category and Heath's performance wasn't on the level of his other nominees, I didn't hold the disdain for the subject or the genre. I just don't think we've had a comic book movie that based on it's merits deserved to be singled out as the top 5 (then) 10 (now) best works of art in film of that year. That's not to say that comic book and genre films aren't the type of films I enjoy the most. I can enjoy one movie 100x more than another movie and still recognize that the other movie is better work of art. Just as I recognize the craft, method, and expertise of a classically trained chef's food is way better than the bbq joint in town. I enjoy the $15 plate from Westwoods BBQ more.
