I don't think it would be funny OR sad if Black Panther had won the "Popular Movie" category. I think it would have absolutely won that. Since they never instituted that category we'll never know.
But the more important issue is that the "Popular Movie" category is unnecessary. The regular Best Film category already has slots for up to ten movies! Cant they just stick BP in there as the 9th or 10th? Duh. Problem solved.
it would have been worse because we know the category is and always a sham. also it wont have won that either since you would have had other movies like mission impossible and possibly fantastic beast 2. no way it could possibly win fairly over those movies in an already sham category created by disney-abc.
the problem is, will this be a conversation if the cast was not black and the film not hyped up by the media? logic tells us we have had better comic films.
logan and tdk was pure art recognition. black panther is not. that is a sham in itself alone.
