That was when Macho Man was "retired" and was a ring announcer with Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper.

I remember hearing Jake tell the story about that segment and Savage was refusing to do the spot unless Jake showed him that the snake wasn't venomous by letting it bite him first. He then went on to say that the snake latched on to Savage a bit too tight and Jake was having a hard time getting it off of him.
