You've already mentioned my two favourite performances of his.
Up until The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), I was used to him playing bad guys...but then his performance as Boromir showed he was capable of playing a good guy just as well.
For me personally, his performance in this movie is my #1 favourite (it's also my favourite movie ever).
