Forgot to add something about Killer Klowns...
This year, Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights event gave them a huge spotlight.
For those who aren't familiar, it is a seasonal event the theme parks do where rides/stores are converted into haunted houses and horror based attractions. It's aimed at adults (I believe 16 is the minimum age) and is a separately ticketed event. It's not just putting cobwebs in the coffee shop, its a legit horror event that they spend millions on (actors, consultants, tech crew). Often, a major horror franchise sets the "theme" for the attractions, and there are three 'big' haunted houses. This year was "Stranger Things" followed by "Poltergeist" and "Halloween 4."
These set the event up to be heavily 80's based. So a lot of horror from that era (Killer Klowns included) was given a dedicated portion of the park. This event does not pull punches on the adult scare factor (they had a remotely operated animotronic Chucky, complete with Brad Dourif impersonator, heckling passersby in exactly the way you'd expect the character to do). I couldn't wait to see what they were going to do with the Klowns.
I went to the event at the Universal Orlando location two weeks ago, and they did not disappoint. I have a seasonal consulting job with Universal for this event (audio/syncing speakers) and we get to see a lot of the behind the scenes stuff. The Klowns were indistinguishable from what we saw in the movies. They hired a bunch of actors to wear the costumes and lurk around the area scaring people. The environment also sold cotton candy, had just as many fog machines as their space ship in the movie, and had their soundtrack playing. It was a cool (and spot on) tribute to say the least...that probably cost a fortune in development and execution...
TLDR, if Universal is shelling out the big bucks to include "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" in such a massive event, there's got to be a pretty big interest/love for the movie. Makes me hopeful that we will someday see a sequel!
