Referencing something and presenting something in a more real, raw and authentic manner is a different thing altogether. I haven't seen the film yet, but it looks a tad superficial to me. Sasha Baron Cohen knew this and that is why he opted out.

Not talking about the films tone, but the noise from idiots who hadn’t seen the film is that they gloss over his sexuality and don’t mention aids which couldn’t be further from the truth. The two main themes of the film are family and his sexuality and that and aids are huge parts of the story and are the most serious parts of it. Everyone was 100% wrong on those counts months ago based on nothing but rumouts
