You're probably right. That's what people don't understand. James Cameron is taking so long because he's working on a new motion capture 3D technology with the sequel that will allow you to experience the film in 3D without glasses. If he accomplishes this feat, everyone will see Avatar 2 out of curiosity alone.
Really? Interesting.
Frankly I think such tech is useless for movies--it is better suited for specialty amusement rides or video games. I could foresee a future ride attraction where famous scenes from movies are recreated in 3d holographic tech. Imagine entering a room that looks like the Bespin wind tunnel and watch Darth Vader and Luke fight it out right in front of you with appropriate sound effects and wind machines hitting you from the sides to give the impression of being there.
Let's say for a moment one could create perfect 3d--where you would see an image in front of you and believe it is really there--it would wreak havoc with the senses because how would they do closeups when someone's head jumping to 50 feet in size would seem to be a giant?
When watching a movie you don't move your head around, thus 3d is kind of pointless. Not to to mention, we know the story is gonna suck.
