This is the spin-off of another spin-off. Unlike a non-spin-off, it doesn't need that much world building at the beginning, but it does need to set the new story up. After 2 episodes, all I can say is: Really? These are the characters we'll follow? I'm not hooked at all. HOPE and ALARIC weren't my favorites or anything, but now they don't feel interesting. I guess it's because I've seen them deal with life-changing drama and now that they've overcome it they feel like normal people. Too normal. VAMPIRE DIARIES started as a high school drama, but it felt relatable enough, and THE ORIGINALS had a lot of problems (mainly characterization and themes), but at least it didn't pander to the target audience. Compare that to JOSIE & LIZZIE and their battle against the mean girl from their school and the mean girl from another school. The only clever part of the 1st episode was the twist about LANDON being an antagonist, subverting the viewer's expectations. This episode hints that he's be a bad boy but ultimately not a villain, so he can still be a love interest for HOPE and fans can still drool over him (it kind of contradicts his 1st appearance in THE ORIGINALS, doesn't it?). So many men in this franchise are treated that way just because the actor is good-looking! Why can't the writers and producers have the balls (no pun intended) to make them irredeemable?!
While the visual effects in VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS weren't on GAME OF THRONES level, they were still pretty good. Partly because most of them didn't need to look so detailed. But this dragon?! Laughable!
