That's kinda the point, things like these typically happen as a reaction against people whining about "religious freedom" and being able to plaster the 10 commandments on public property. When confronted with something like this, suddenly their cries of religious freedom go out the window and their hypocrisy becomes apparent. They have no one to blame but themselves.
basically... people are trying to exploit "religious freedom" to promote bad.
As a nonbeliever, obviously I don't believe there's is such thing as "legitimate religion" so that's a moot argument. You might as well be telling me about legit magic spells.
BTW as a conservative you may wanna consider getting into Laveyan Satanism as it actually fits much better into Republican principles than Christianity (Jesus was arguably a socialist, Laveyans are basically libertarians)
