*argument devolves into a catfight. Rinse and repeat over a few decades and that's how we got here*
Anyway, my point is that I'm pretty sure this rivalry started out as a very friendly chat about a few guys who love comicbooks stating which comics they liked better and why. Evolve that argument over a few decades, include quite a number of anti-social nerds into the mix who love their comics, and you can see how we ended up with this rivalry today.
The biggest divide seems to have come with Dark Knight.
Even then in the comic shops I frequented to buy manga in the 00's, people were buying from whichever company the heroes they liked were from.
When I first started collecting comics, I didn't know what Marvel or DC was. I didn't care about the comic company, I bought comics depending on the charater. If I liked the character I bought the comics. The debates I had with other kids was about which character was better, not about which company was better.
In my mid-late teens I finally distinguished between Marvel and DC because of movies and cartoons. I went through my comic collection and found that around 75% of them were Marvel.
