I wonder what would be the best case scenario for them to do–especially what the people who hated The Last Jedi even more than I did would think is the best thing for them to do for the next flick (I know many of you have written you don’t think it’s redeemable, but if you had to do it, what would you do?).
Three things I would do:
1. Connect Rey with Jyn from Rogue One. I’m not sure how, exactly, but I still really like this idea. Even as aunt and niece (I guess you can’t rework it so that Jyn had a daughter before her death)? It still makes her [Rey] “come from nobodies,” but it makes sense and is a surprise.
2. Rework the twists to have all been pre-thought-out by Han, Luke, and Leia. There’s a way this could be done: make it so that Han knew he was going to his death in The Force Awakens and took on the challenge for the sake of the galaxy. It would somewhat restore the character’s heroism, which he achieved in RotJ, at the end. You could even keep how unexpected it seemed, because he didn’t expect to be killed then. Make Luke’s self-exile and change in character part of the plot to draw out Kylo Ren, knowing about the Force Connection between Kylo and Rey. That’s one of the reasons he smiles at the end of the movie–it’s part of the plan, in a reverse of the Emperor’s “all is going according to plan.” Here the good guys are working behind the scenes. I’m sure I missed something. But basically rework the twists without negating their effectiveness (as Luke’s throwing away the lightsaber did).
3. Redo and explain Snoke’s character, and connect him with the Emperor. I’m not sure how to do this, but there was a part where Luke said that Snoke was corrupting Ren’s mind (hm. Just noticed the similarities between “Rey” and “Ren.” Wonder if that were on purpose). Perhaps he still exists, within Ren’s mind, propelling him to the Dark Side still despite his [Ren’s] turning on him [Snoke]? Hypothetically, he could still be the Emperor, which is the twist I would have wanted.
Of course, there’s no getting around some major problems, but that’s how I’d go about making the next entry–restoring the original heroes’ central place, for example.
