A rather shaky start though. There wasn't another commercially succesful superhero film until 10 years after it (Batman 89), and any super hero film that wasn't Batman related didn't too well in the 90s (it was the first Xmen film that finally opened up the commercial potential for super hero films) Some of my earliest Wikipedia deep dives were finding out how early Batman was in talks after Superman's release. It wasn't until 1989, yet its development chatter was much earlier than I'd ever known. Superman is my #29 all time, only TDK right behind #30 as CBM in my top 50. It really is a fine film, never mind merely its CBM genre significance. The Smallville stuff is my fav stretch.
