Huh, I had the opposite reaction. The characters are the only good things in the movie to me, the story is just a rehash of A New Hope and is full of contrived absurdities. It's energetic and looks great though, I'll give it that.

Actually it amuses me that JJ Abrams has the EXACT same strengths and weaknesses in The Force Awakens as he does in his Star Trek movies. And people pointed them out in the ST movies, but apparently he just didn't care.

Yeah I agree it was a rehash of A New Hope but with a girl as the main protagonist, which a believe was the original story for the 1977 version. I think I was just disappointed overall, it got such big hype and for me it was a let down. Kylo Ren had potential to be an awesome bad guy.
I'm hoping Rogue One is going to be better, I haven't seen that one yet.
