Right? I'd compare it to Thor: Ragnarok myself. It has that same gonzo energy and imagination to it. It makes me wish James Wan directed Justice League instead of either Whedon or Snyder. The difference to me is that Ragnarok knew when it was being ridiculous. It spent most of its time making fun of itself. Aquaman seems to genuinely think it's clever.
Aquaman does some amazing stuff visually, and Mamoa is a charismatic lead. Those concepts worked. I really thought they had figured it out, judging by the trailers. But the humor was stale and the writing was incredibly lazy.
The worst part is the fanboys losing their minds. One thing I got a kick out of was the octopus drummer. Hilarious, inventive stuff. Put that in Ragnarok or Guardians and these same guys would be bitching about it until the end of time, but here of course it's genius filmmaking. And yes I'm aware the same can be said for some of the idiot Marvel fanboys on this site. That doesn't make their own hypocrisy acceptable.
I need to make one thing clear here. I'm not a DC hater. Batman Begins and TDK are two of the best CBMs ever made. As for the DCEU, Wonder Woman is dragged down by a subpar third act but it's still a fantastic flick. I saw BvS twice in theaters because there were elements that I truly enjoyed even if it was a mess as a whole. I'm not a DC hater. I could've skipped Aquaman entirely, as I skipped Sony's Venom because it looked like shit. I go to these movies because I want to enjoy them, but Aquaman was a bust for me.
I didn't get that experience from it. Sure there's trailer lines thrown into the mix but nothing was enough to take me out of the experience. You saw BVS twice in theaters? More power to you then.
