As a Frost Giant, he would also have ice abilities like the Jotunn they fought in the first movie.
Remember, Thor ducked, but took no damage from the bullets shot by the fighter in Avengers.

All that firepower when he entered the scene & he didn't flinch nor did he take damage.
I assume brains-wise Arthur is on par with thor so why wouldnt he fall for the illusions?
Don't forget the snake story which indicates Loki can transform as easily as the Norse trickster who turned into a mare & a fish in different myths.
