During This Time Of Year, Why Do We Generally Tend To Look Forward With Hope That The New Year

Does it EVER work the other way around (in other words, that we're sorry to see a particular year ending, and NOT looking forward to the new one starting) ??

Hope is like faith. It has no basis in reality. It just exists to make us feel good.

You'd think we'd have learned our lesson from the outgoing year being as bad as the previous one we'd ALSO hoped would be better! We never learn.

Personally, I DONT think next year will be better.

It might, MIGHT, get better, marginally, in 2020 (if you gather my meaning...)
