You see that he actually loved Gamora and it hurt him to his core to do what he did. That is a pretty forced scene. It was pointed out in the cinema sins episode of IW and its hard to disagree with them. Thanos goes to a planet of Gamoras people and randomly picks her out and says she has great strength and takes her under his wing. No real reason is given and the emotional connection is pretty weak so when he sacrafices her on the clifftop, theres little resonance in his supposed pain because the backstory is rushed. And its more strange she seems very shocked when he picks her as the thing he loves for his sacrafice. Im sure everyone in the audience knew straight away soon as Red Skull mentioned the cost of the gem that Thanos was sacrificing Gamora.
