This post will detail the shockingly small drop of Aquaman’s second Friday at the domestic box office. Aquaman continued to reign over the deluge of Christmas releases, earning another $17.1 million on its second Friday to bring its cume to $154m (including $20m in IMAX). That’s a drop of 47% from its $32.5m Friday (including $4.7m in pre-release previews). So, yes, it fell a lot less on its second Friday (from its first Friday) than The Force Awakens (-58%), which is impressive even if Star Wars 7 was coming off a $119m single-day gross. For what it’s worth, Force Awakens had its second Friday fall on Christmas Day.
In terms of superhero films, none of which have opened over this specific weekend before, the 47% Friday-to-Friday drop is better than (offhand) Black Panther (-62%), Wonder Woman (-58%) and Iron Man (-61%, counting the Thursday previews before its opening day) and anything I can find since Batman Begins (-45% on its second Friday in June of 2005), and that one opened on a Wednesday.
