I have to disagree with calling this true classic a cult film. It is neither obscure nor unpopular with mainstream audiences.
On the contrary - it was one of the most popular movies of 1938-39, and was the most expensive Warner Bros film up to that time. It turned out to be the studio's biggest money-maker of 1939, making back far more than its cost.
It also turned Errol Flynn into a major star.
