I thought Foles was a Free Agent after this year. Have I been reading wrong?
According to this article from last month it seems the thought process is he will be a Free Agent.

"The expectation is that Foles, thanks in part to his altered deal, will be a free agent. Here is why: The Eagles have a $20-million option for 2019, which they would only pick up if he's the starter (and Wentz should make a full recovery, so Foles won't start).
Foles can buy back the option by paying $2 million. The team can also franchise him, theoretically. So almost certainly, he's free."
So, my guess is under this situation that the Eagles win the Super Bowl again, the Eagles then Franchise tag him? Because according to above it seems like a forgone conclusion that Foles buys out his option at $2 million to hit free agency and make what would be more guaranteed money and a chance to start.
Last year the Franchise Tag for a QB was $23.189 Million. That will increase with after recent QB signings rising like Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers. So i'd say it goes to over $24 million at the least. It jumped from $21.268 in 2017 to $23.189 in 2018. So nearly jumped $2 million.
So in this scenario the Eagles Franchise Tag Foles at let's say $24.5 Million. That gives them an extended time to talk contract with him if they choose to trade Wentz. Or, they then use Foles under the Franchise Tag (which there is a chance he refuses to sign it ala LeVeon Bell) and look to trade him.
There is then another option of letting Foles walk in free agency and they get a Compensatory pick back for the following years draft. I would expect something along the lines of a 3rd round pick? Possibly a 2nd at the highest.
Now if Foles signs the Tag then I think the Eagles could get a LATE 1st round pick or an early 2nd (Jimmy G Trade as Example) round pick for him by a QB hungry team. But who is that team? That Giants and the Jags are in positions to draft a cheap and rookie controlled QB. Jags don't have crap for cap space and wouldn't trade a top 10 pick for Foles. I don't think the Giants would either as they're not a QB away. Would the Giants trade an early 2nd? That I think is realistically possible. Jags, still won't have the cap space as I understand it. The Broncos would probably be the most realistic fit since John Elway can't scout college QB's worth a shit. They could have the cap space to pull it off if they chose.
In the end, the solution SHOULD be to keep Wentz. He played at an MVP level before he got hurt last season. This season I think was a bit of a wash. He was coming back from the injury and it takes time to get comfortable and trust your leg. Then he got hurt again. He's also younger and more affordable than Foles (for 1 more year). Sure, Foles will forever be a hero to the Philly fans. I just think the logical solution would be to Tag Foles and try and trade him hoping that he signs that tag.
You could MAYBE get 2 first round picks for Wentz but with him now getting hurt back to back seasons, I'm not so sure you get that either. You'll be getting Wentz for nearly $8.5 million in 2019 and a 5th year option of nearly $30 million in 2020.

"Wentz is under contract through 2019, and the Eagles hold a fifth-year option that would pay him close to $30 million, which will be the average of the top 10 highest-paid QBs in the league. If the Eagles choose to franchise-tag him in 2021, he’d make the average of the top five players at his position."
So the person trading for him won't be getting that build around a cheap QB for anything more than 1 season before he starts getting paid the big bucks. However given what Kahlil Mack got, 2 first round picks is possible if teams are willing to look past the recent medicals.
So yeah, in the end since the $20 Million option next season seems to likely be bought out by Foles I think unless the Eagles are going to sign him long term and commit to him over Wentz then they have to either let him walk and get a Comp pick or Tag him and trade him. They COULD tag him and keep him but I personally would only do that if they're not going to be getting enough back in return for a trade and they're okay with letting him walk after 2019. However if Foles were going to be tagged and coming into the 2019 season as the backup to Wentz, I think that would be doing him dirty as a now 2 time Super Bowl winning QB for that Franchise.
