I really liked it a lot, the screenplay was ingenious, sort of like Sleuth was. But Rebecca Pidgeon's performance was just...blech. Yeah, I agree. For all of Mamet’s genius, he seems to be blind to his girlfriends’ lousy performances; Lindsay Crouse wasn’t much better in House of Games. Directing actors doesn’t seem to be his strong point, anyway; there are some great performances in his films, but they’re by great actors (e.g., William H. Macy, Joe Mantegna, Anthony Hopkins). Even the late, great Ricky Jay didn’t give particularly good performances in these movies but, rather, merely serviceable ones. I tend to overlook Pidgeon’s performance in this one, as bad as it is. The good stuff is just so good.
