As someone who likes the 2016 film (yes, someone like me exists) this feels like an insult to the 2016 film.
“I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film,” Reitman says.
OK, so why do a new film totally unrelated to the 2016 film if you want more stories from the 2016 film personnel? This is basically just sweeping the 2016 film under the rug and pretending it never happened. I think people should give the 2016 film credit for building itself from the ground up and not try to be a rehash of the 1984 like the 1989 film primarily was. And if you think the 2016 film is a remake of the 1984 film, you're wrong. It's not. Now we know for sure there's no effort to give a fighting chance to right whatever wrongs happened with the 2016 film. If Jason wants more stories from the 2016 personnel, then he should convince the studio to make an effort on that.
Right now, this says to me "We know the 2016 film underperformed/flopped so we're going to wipe it from memory and make a new safe, familiar film that will be "The Force Awakens" of Ghostbusters if not a total rehash."
I mean no matter what we were going to get another GB film anyway regardless if it has a male or female cast. And of course this is being done primarily for financial reasons and not just "for the love of the original" or whatever.
