Abraham Lincoln had a patent for inflatable balloons used in lifting boats over shoals or reefs. Seeing the time wasted in unloading carho from boats, loading it onto wagons, dragging the horses and the wagons along until they found deeper parts of rivers, unloading the wagons, loading the boats back up, he designed this system to lift the boats higher than usual so they could skip steps seven through ten.
