Technically any big budget extravaganza that’s been nominated since 2009 is invalid. Because they expanded the field to 10 due to the backlash from TDK not getting nominated. Those extra 5 spots were basically supposed to be the “Popular Film” category. Good point. But I would argue BP goes beyond that after Disney attempted to openly rig the awards for it this year. I feel like any summer blockbuster that’s third act is basically a big fan service jerk off session doesn’t really belong at the Oscars. Even WW devolved from a badass war film to a God on God fight fest. If you have to force your story to appeal to the masses then it’s probably not made for the Academy.
