Many years ago I caddied at a high end country club. Fun job for a high school and college student. We had a pretty famous ex-baseball player from the 50's and 60's who was a golfer and member at the club. He played his whole career in our MLB team and was a long time sportscaster for the games. So he was a super famous local sports celebrity.
The day I caddied for him he was making the obligatory small talk. He asked me if I liked baseball, and I looked at him with a straight face and said "No". Then he asked me if I knew who he was, and I looked at the member tag on his golf bag and read it then told him his name. That was about it for conversation from there on out. I had no idea who he was, obviously.
When the loop was over - he tipped me about 4 times what one would expect, told the golf superintendent some nice things about me, and asked for me on future loops. Other staff members asked how bad of a tip I got, with a concerned look on their faces. When I told them, their response was "Wow, you must have kissed his ass big-time". I just said "Why would I do that?" They were even more amazed because I didn't even know who he was.
Turns out he was known to be super cheap with tipping, and generally seeming to be grumpy. He was just a little sour that his glory days were over, and he was relegated to watching the action on the field and not being a player any longer. After I put this together, every time I saw people interacting with him, whenever they would bring up anything about baseball he would be very clear about one thing. He had nothing to do with what happens on the field or with the team, and he didn't want to talk about it.
I think he also liked me because I wasn't from the rich side of the area like most of the loopies were. It was a cool interaction for me. A lot of occasions at that job turned out best for me when my interactions with important people were just sincere, because I didn't know or care who they were - and they knew that but I was obviously just trying to do a good job. And on the flipside, whenever I tried to know about people and their status - talking too much got me in a bit of trouble.
