Compared to American team sports, it seems like Premier League has a very unfair playing field in terms of resources. There are teams in the United States who have been bad for long periods of time (Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders, etc), but, generally speaking, they have the same possibility of being good as anyone else (possible exception of baseball with big and small markets).
From an outsider's point of view, that doesn't seem to be the case with Premier League or soccer in general.
So if you are a fan of Sunderland or Norwich or some team that bounces back and forth between being relegated and a Premier League team, do you only root for your squad or do you have a team that you root for that is in the upper tier and could actually win? Or do you hope to have a miracle Leicester City season and sod off to all of the large market clubs?
You mentioned Leicester City; if you'd put $10 on them at the start of the season you'd have won $50,000. There's never been as big an upset as that in any of the top 4 North American sports.
