or it was an excuse by Singer to get Hugh Jackman naked. He never got Wolverine right and you know it. He didn't get him right but, after a while, that was beside the point. Jackman's on-screen portrayal began to heavily influence how the character was drawn in the comic books. He was rendered as taller, less hairy and with a slimmer build (instead of a stocky one). The last artists to draw the character accurately (or at least per the intention of the original creator) was likely Sam Keith, Kent Willians, and Frank Quitely. In the early aughts, younger artists whose first exposure to the X-Men was the movies began to take over, and Jackman was their goto reference.
