[I always assumed they implied he went to his piano lesson that day, like any other day, so she "called" him her student, even though it would've been obvious to her that he already knew how to play and "one" lesson wouldn't have resulted in that level of skill. at one point when his playing is improving and he has come to her ( his AGAIN ) for a first lesson with her … she says to him something along the line of "are you sure you didn't play before coming to see me ?' <-- not exact quote !
