Why would they? Look at the last two from each franchise...
But I also sort of enjoy Freddy vs Jason. It's dumb, but I think it's fun. It strikes a nice tone, has some good over the top kills, balanced both killers pretty well, has your predictable stock characters but is populated by a decent cast, and has a stylish look. All things considered it could have been a lot worse and was much better than either series' previous installment.
