I'll have to disagree. This was her and Shalene Wooedley's shtick 5 years ago. 

Took me a second but I remember reading a article about them bucking the system and wanting to change it when I barely knew who they were. It was a Vulture article.

Edit: you could argue that Marvel chose her to be Captain Marvel because of her views, but she doesn't need the encouragement she's been doing this kind of thing before anybody knew who she was.
