I like Fincher's work, but I agree that this and Fight Club, while good films, aren't the masterpieces that people make them out to be.

For the case of this film, I don't think it gets really compelling until John Doe shows up. Before that, and while it's entertaining enough to keep interest, it feels like standard police mystery stuff with the retiring cop going on one last assignment to stop a major killer.
